I find the railings hindered the driver and passengers escape. It forces them to either go past an exploding engine or a potentially flailing rear wheel. Removing the middle rail would mean a quick jump, and the guys are clear.

The long plume of raw fuel vapours a moment before the blast was a red flag to me. Black plume isn't bad it's burning but white plume it's just spewing unburned oil.
